Ugh! Your description of the sound echoed in my ears, as well as the knot forming in my stomach, from the photo. Painful-emotionally and financially. I hope it is repairable. I’m looking forward to my next trip with you, so get back on that horse!
NANPA and ASMP, as well as some other photo organizations, offer insurance for camera gear. I have it and it has made sleeping at night a bit easier. It covers damages such as your GFX 100 experienced. The policy has a $500 deductible, but that's not bad considering that it also covers theft of your entire kit.
Ouch! I had a similar moment years ago turning around to watch my tripod mounted wooden 4 x 5 Slowly topple off of a 15 foot cliff. It was not completely smashed and with glue and c clamps I resurrected it for the rest of the trip. But the winds in Patagonia are always fierce, Maybe now worse than usual with climate change.
Les: sorry to hear about your damaged camera--those sounds of destruction are yet another test to walk that middle path.
Eden, as usual you are so on target. Thanks for your empathy.
A sound I hope I never hear. Sorry for your mishap! I hope you are/were insured. Happy shooting/printing.
Thank you, Thomas. One never knows what an insurance company will cover until an actual claim is submitted!

Thanks, Bruce. I'm about to test how well the rider on my homeowner's insurance performs.

The guides told us they had not seen such strong, sustained winds in 30 years!
My condolences. This is painful to look at! I hope it can be repaired!
Thanks, Susanne. I'll follow up with an update once I know the $$$ damage.
Sad to hear it.Hope it gets repaired soon.
