For many years now my photography has been targeting the final print. To me creating the print is a key part of the photographic process. It is not the final part of course. The final part is mounting/ framing and displaying the print. Printing improves my photography. Even now, with years of photography and printing behind me I am finding that producing thirty prints for a local business has made me assess my photography again. I know I can continue to develop (no pun intended) my skills.

Graham, well said. I know so many photographers who were initially afraid of printing. Once they began to realize its potential, they all have told me - every one - that it has significantly improved their photography. In many of those cases, they tell me it has made their time in the field more efficient and effective . They now judge their captures by their potential to make a great print.

You summed up my thoughts succinctly. Social media is worthless. It is only the print that matters. There is nothing better than a print and no digital image on a screen can compare to a print.

Michael, thanks for your comment. Some might disagree, but we're obviously on the same page.

A beautifully constructed discussion Lester. Sadly, most of my photography falls in to the “if I don’t take this now I may never be back again and catch up with my family further down the track”. I need to enjoy the moment more and worry about capturing it less.

Keith, II had to laugh when I read your comment. I'll bet we have all been in that situation. Yes, there are times to just enjoy without taking a shot, but then there are hopefully times when we can make time to fully enjoy the moment and immerse ourselves in. capturing it.

A lot to think about here Lester, thank you. Isn’t fine art defined by intent?
