This year I’m exploring using folios for gifts. About a dozen A4 prints on fine art paper separated with tissue paper and delivered in a three flap folder. The resulting work is about the size and convenience of a magazine, avoiding the problem of hoping the recipient has wall space. Like so many things photographic , the adventures never ends!

Stu,

Would love to hear more about this... what images? what recipients? small number, large number? Thoughts on image selection based on the recipients?

Earlier this year I did my first real project, “Images,Israel”. Based on several trips, it was also the first time that I selected and printed the images as ‘fine art’ - archival, rag papers, and images with an intrinsic aesthetic value. I exhibited the project in two different galleries, accompanied by travelogues and 11x14 prints for sale. Lots of fun! But what next? No one wants a 20x24 framed print to arrive unexpectedly for Christmas!

That’s where the idea of the folio came in: a cover page, ten images, a thumbnail page with captions, all separated with tissue paper and enclosed in a three flap folder, labeled with the title. The prints all on heavy rag paper and chosen for their coherence as a body of work.

I’m only making a small number for selected friends and family, and they are all getting the same images. It’s a natural end point that allows me to share a project in a way that my friends won’t hate me :-)

In the spring, when the show season begins I’ll experiment with shrink wrapping, plus having an open floor model. Shows are a great way to see what works or doesn’t and I continually hear “love your work but have no place to hang one.”

Congrats on the show and we're always interested in what our readers are up to. If you get a chance send us a few pics of any of your shows large or small, heck even send us some pictures of those folios.
