Extraneous question, is there a way to get a review of prints submitted to the print contest? I’m will to pay and very curious if each paper was considered appropriate for each picture
Hi Jean. Bob and I will discuss this today. And, yes, one of the criteria was whether the paper was appropriate for the image. In practice, however, it more came down to whether a given paper was inappropriate, in the sense that it detracted from the image or the story the image was designed to tell.
Jean, I'm going to see Les today. I will bring this up as I think there's a large desire for serious photographers producing work in print that want editorial help and constructive feedback. We have a workshop that we hold annually that fills that need for a few people as it's limited to 4 people and is a 3 day workshop. We have discussed something a little less intense and more accessible but haven't quite landed on what that would look like.
Okay... So, after a very very long discussion we've decided that we're going to dip our toe into these waters gently. Keep a look out here for something you and others maybe interested in.
And for you specifically, since you were a participant and very specifically want to discuss the prints you submitted we would like to understand exactly what your desires to be so we don't overcommit and make sure you are getting what you need/want. Please shoot Les an email at lespicker@gmail.com and he'll discuss off-line as a one-time thing for now.
Thanks so much for being part of our little group of print lovers here.
Hi, it's interesting how often people are switching their equipment. You are loosing a lot of money.
Yes medium format is special and of course higher resolution can have a positive effect on printing. It's from my view a lot more difficult to differentiate tonal effects from lenses or processing from the MF versus full frame.
i do like MF and own a Phase One camera with 100MP but my main point is the joy of composing the picture so I am using my PO and an iPad or a MacBook Pro with tethering to get the picture I have an idea about.
So printing is the next fun, later.
my other photographic work I am doing with my Canon EF equipment, it's much more comfotable for walking but I can get also excellent pictures in my view also it's inly FF.
So have much fun but I disagree that onyl MF can be the basis of good prints. Michael Wendt
Les, you must be my brother from another mother. I shot Nikon for 40+ years and then switched to the Fuji x system and MF, first Pentax 645D, then Z because I love making large prints. When the GFX system came out I switched over because of the better lens selection and I've never looked back. I have owned every camera in the GFX lineup (I know I have a bad case of GAS). When I first shot with the GFX 100, the depth and smoothness of the tonal range almost brought a tear to my eye. The ergonomics however were difficult for me so when the 100S was announced I knew it was my dream camera and I have not been disappointed. I second all your comments.
Curious, did you keep your x system and do you still use it? The reason I ask is that I've been in and out of the x system a few times and now again I find myself a "2 system" photographer. A bigger bulkier system that I can shoot anything with and an extremely stripped down x system with only 3 small primes and an x-pro3 when I want to go without a camera bag but still produce good quality photographs.
Yes I still have the X system. I use it for mostly personal work especially things that require fast AF like grandchildren and their sports. Also like it when I have to travel light. Currently have the XT-4 and X100V
Hey, Paul. I hope it was another mother, unless my mother was good at keeping secrets. In any case, I agree with your take on the GFX 100. I also think you made a smart move in getting the 100S. Please keep us informed on how it goes.
Well written piece, thanks for keeping us up to date and sharing you knowledge.
You're most welcome, Paul.
Without a doubt, my favorite camera. It's not like I'm going out to eat with pals or anything like that. Thanks for the info

Thank you. I’m interested in the workshop, couldn’t really work out getting across country this year.

Interesting insights as always Les. Thanks.

Michael, thanks for writing. I agree. I believe I said in the article that you do not need a fancy-shmancy camera system to get great prints.
