Don't know what hardware you use, but should it be a Mac, may I suggest PrintTool from Roy Harrington? ( http://www.quadtonerip.com/html/QTRprinttool.html ) It completely bypasses any Adobe/Apple/Colorsync issues. I've been printing with it exclusively for many years now. That way, I know if there are any issues with my images, the fault is mine alone.

I too have been using PrintTool for the past 10 years (originally for Piezography printing)—highly recommended affordable RIP for the Mac...supports custom ICC profiles as well as ABW printing as well as 8 or 16bit workflow

Never heard of it but will check it out. Might be a good tool for debugging. And yes our print/workshop environment is all Mac / Canon

Just purchased PrintTool. Life is back to normal.... My prints on the Mac look normal again. :-)

Was the Adobe problem limited to your install, or is it a wide spread issue we should know about?

I wish I could tell you with certainty but I cannot. I can get you the version number that we had an issue with but it may only have been a problem with our printer drivers, etc. I can tell you the version prior and immediately after (the current version as of today) DO NOT have the issue in our print environment (Mac OS 12 and 13 with Canon printers/drivers of the latest release)

Thank you. I'm running the latest version as you described.

If you haven't done so and are confident in your environment do yourself a favor and make reference prints as described so that you can verify things down the road vs. a known quantity.

I appreciate your candid explanation of your experience and the advice on a basic SOP to help others with similar situations. From someone that has gone thru frustrating moments in my printing workflow, It's reassuring to know that far more knowledgeable professionals stumble sometimes. Thanks!

One other piece of advice:

Keep saying "it's not me, it's them"

Curse a lot but do not use the lord's name in vain...

Pray a lot (see previous)

Ps. Black and Whites almost always show printing issues if they are in anyway showing a color cast that is not. entirely due to the base of the paper color. (Almost always).

good stuff...a great l'il rip

on an aside, I've been following your baryta comparisons with interest— I've been playing with Red River Palo Duro Softgloss paper and it's looking like a good one—I've been using the Moab Juniper but sometimes have problems getting in stock up here, so have been looking around for an alternative — not a baryta paper, but rag with no OBA's

I think Tracey has a good solution which i use for inkjet and maybe should consider for not inkjet inks. While i am not sure what you mean by number 5, i have an older mac that i have not upgraded the OS system but number six reverting the libraries is not clear. Is there a way you can explain number 5 snd 6 in more details?

5. I didn't and don't want to get into extremely specific recipes regarding reproduction of your OS/Software environment as there are so many options/solutions/variations depending on what you use and what is specific to your environment. I wanted to make a point that if you do not have a solution in place that allows you to revert your OS and software environment easily, you should. Ex. Using one of a few different methods including time machine it's trivial if you use a Mac to create a stable boot environment that you can use if an update or major upgrade goes wrong. I personally have an SSD where I keep a known good OS environment. I could reproduce that every time Adobe or anything else gets updated but I don't. Instead I know how to revert Adobe versions and only periodically/less frequently than Adobe updates. Use whatever recipe is best for your purposes.

6. Assume your LR/Capture One libraries will be updated when you update Adobe LR or C1 and CANNOT be opened by a previous version. I use C1 sessions so it's a non-event for me but with LR you can loose A LOT of work if you get rid of the library copy the updates make. Also make sure you do not do a lot of metadata/adjustment work inside a new version of LR until you are SURE it's solid.
