As a 1st AC working in film, it's interesting how lenses for both narrative and commercial work are often chosen for their weird quirks, level of distortion or the way they render certain tonality in color. The most optically perfect lenses I rarely get my hands on, but with stills-lenses they're promoted quite the opposite way around.

I got A Canon R5 with the 24-105L and it is an excellent performer.

I have the RF 24-105L as well (it came with an R body) and I'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between it and my ancient EF version 1 for the vast majority of pictures made.

Very interesting article. When I saw that the images were printed on Estrada rag, I thought about the issue I wrestling with currently. I hope you or other viewers can offer some pointers to resolve my issue. I proof manually using Photoshop. I duplicate the image, tile the two images, do the proof set up, load the printer/paper icc profile and adjust the profiled image to look similar if not very close to the original image and then print off the profiled copy.

When I use a matte paper like Estrada, the image needs a lot of adjustment - contrast, saturation and sharpness compared to a luster or baryta paper. Sometimes even the adjustments are not sufficient for a reasonable facsimilie - the image is a bit "muddy" . Any workarounds you can suggest? Will print programs like Imageprint or QImage 1 help? Thanks for your response in advance!

Would love to help but I need to make two points. First is I am not completely sure of exactly what you are doing in your workflow as you describe it. Two there are a million (or at least a couple of dozen common things that can go wrong). Not having access to your environment these things are hard to diagnose verbally.

Here's a wild guess based on the symptoms you describe and the primary clue being you are satisfied with your prints on glossier papers. There is a good chance you may be choosing a media type in the printer driver that is using photo black instead of matte black ink when you are printing on matte paper.

Thanks for your reply. I will ry some workarounds and let you know how it pans out. I was wondering if you use any print management software in your workflow.

Also what paper type are you selecting in the printer driver when using Entrada?

As a note, the free Canon Print Pro (they rename it a lot) May help you in diagnosing your problem as that software is very strait forward if you happen to be using a Canon printer.

Typically we do not use any specialized software. I regularly use PS, Lightroom Classic, and Capture One.

Enhanced Matte paper - Moab recommends this.
