Announcing The Winners Of The 2021 Paper Arts Collective International Competition & Exhibition
Black & White Honorable Mention Winners
We're just a tiny bit ahead of schedule confirming all of the photographic artists that were were winners in the 2021 Paper Arts Collective Competition. Their work will be exhibited in October. We'll be sending out the rest of the results over the next week so stay tuned.
As mentioned in the last update, the overall quality of work with submissions blew all of us away. After we announce the artists that will be on exhibition, we'll also be following up with additional artists that we felt had compelling work that we believe would interest and inspire our Paper Arts Collective community.
Peter Dunner
Peter does all types of photography, but his favorites are travel with a focus on street photography, and macro, finding the unexpected details to photograph.
The "Village Priest" was shot in Cotignac, France, a small provincial village. "There was a market place and I saw the village Priest talking with someone", Peter tells us. "I was interested in his hand holding the Bible which said volumes and told a story through two or three details".
Walter Levy
Walter is an avid amateur who has been pursuing his fascination with photography for 50 years. "My vision was too personal for me to pursue this as a career, so I long ago decided to devote my efforts to following my muse".
“Aristotle’s Dream” is a meditation on geometry and the dream state, according to Walter. "I refrain from a literal description of what it is because that would diminish its surreal and mysterious qualities".
"The ambiguity of this photograph allows the viewer to make of it what they will. At the same time, the composition has elements of formality and playfulness that invite exploration of a deceptively simple image".
Jeffrey Glasser
Jeffrey has been an active photographer for 50 years, with more than sixty exhibitions, and magazine articles. He recently had a one person exhibition curated by Carl Juste (Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist).
Jeffrey mostly uses film capture in medium and large format and he prints in silver gelatin, platinum/palladium and digital with archival materials.
“Grapes and Pear” is one of a series of fruits and vegetables and other objects that will fit in an old wok. "The wok was in our pantry and was going to be discarded when I noticed the wonderful patina", Jeffrey notes. "It seemed that it would be a perfect background for objects that would fit in it".
Dan Mohan
Dan has 25 years of experience in hospital-related photography, with forays into commercial brochures and advertising. Dan now runs a small business, Dan Mohan Photographs, specializing in medical images as well as general images for healthcare, education, corporate brochures, and advertising. As a fine arts photographer, Dan has participated in numerous exhibitions both regional and national.
Dan told us how he went about capturing "Charleston City Hall". "I was attracted to the curved wrought iron railing and it’s repeating vertical lines in a backward S-curve. Additionally, the dark iron contrasts so nicely with the white marble steps which in turn offer repeating horizontal lines".
"I noticed the woman emerging from the building and anticipated her using these steps to access the street and I made my exposure as she appeared in the top of my viewfinder. Indeed, the anonymous woman adds an element of elegant motion as she descends these marvelous steps".
Danielle Austen
Danielle is an award-winning fine art photographer specializing in intimate portraits of the environment, with an emphasis on abstracts. She has photographed for over 30 years, and professionally for 20. Danielle has exhibited in juried, group, and solo shows and has been a selected Artist-in-Residence in seven programs around the country. "My goal is to present the viewer with an unexpected perspective of nature and hopefully create an emotional response to my images".
"Swell" was created at dawn on the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley National Park, CA. "The textures, the patterns, and the tones in the mountains and dunes were an abstract photographer's dream", Danielle says. "The beauty of the dunes is it's constantly moving and evolving, due to the winds. The early morning light added depth and contrast to an ever-changing scene. I was literally spinning around in a circle, trying to capture the magic that was happening around me".
We’d like to thank all of our sponsors that have made this exhibition and contest possible: Moab Paper, BenQ monitors, X-Rite (Calibrite), Nations Photo Lab, and Les Picker Fine Art Photography.
Please give a shout-out and congratulations to these photographic artists. If you have questions for the judges, the artists, or just want to let us know which of these you love, drop a comment.
