You are brave indeed but fear not the reliance on iPhone. Cameras are my main source of printing pleasure but I have made many an 8.5x11 and greeting cards from an iPhone 10 and now 14+. With specific subject matter (I.e. silhouettes, panos) I have made a few 13x19 and even very impressively detailed 12x36 canvas stretches. However, I am not as fortunate as you in having regular use of a medium format 102mp and suspect my standards for detail may be lower than yours, lol. Whatever the case I admire your open mindedness and safe travels!!

Thanks, Guy. I appreciate your support. The 102MP is udeful when making the large format prints that we do here, but I've seen gorgeous fine art images (and prints) shot with 3MP cameras when digital first came on the scene.

I used my iPhone 15 on my last photo workshop in Cuba. Because I was instructing others I did not want to be distracted with my full size cameras and lenses. The results from the iPhone were amazing. I run my own fine art printing business and used my Epson P7570 to make 18" x 24" prints on Hanhnemuhle's Sugar Cane paper. The prints look every bit as good as from my Canon EOS 5DMKiv and L lenses. I would also highly recommend using a grip for your iPhone. It makes holding and shooting with the phone so much more controlled and the built in battery charger keeps your phone going during a long day of sight seeing and shooting. I found the Snap Grip from ShiftCam to be the best for me.

Mike, thanks for the group advice. Too late for this trip but I’ll be sure to check it out upon n my return.

Meant to write “grip” not group.

I did exactly this on a trip to Colombia some years ago with an iPhone 7. I was happily surprised at how well it worked out, even when printing. Best part was being able to immediately share images with the subject (text and email) and social media. Encountered some kids playing on the cathedral plaza and they had a blast mugging for the camera because they could see the results immediately. Meanwhile dad resolutely kept his back to the process, reading his paper, because he could hear his kids having fun with this crazy gringo.

Stu, your description sounds great. I look forward to getting some good images, then bringing them back to the studio to experiment with printing.

The iPhone you'll already have with you anyway...

Take a little compact ( like a Lumix LX100II or likewise) and you'll still feel being a 'photographer'... + the image quality will be better!

Dominique, I’d like to take another “real” camera with me, but I don’t want to ruin the experiment. The temptation would be too great to just leave my phone in my pocket!

As it turns out, I am in Portugal for 2 weeks and decided to only bring my iPhone leaving all other kits behind. So far, I am enjoying using the phone. I have to be take extra care with perspectives as it is easy to tilt the thing. For storage, I upgraded my cloud subscription and let the phone upload to the cloud when I am back in WiFi range. I do enjoy not having a bag to carry around or having to stop and change lenses in the middle of a crowd. Enjoy Spain!

Wow, Lyle! That’s very encouraging. I’ll be In Portugal next year for an extended time so I’ll undoubtedly bring my full gear with me. But for the Spain trip this is truly an experiment with the end result being art prints. The question is whether the files will stand up to Bob’s high standards as a master printer.

I have successfully taken and printed iPhone shots (even on a 7s up to 11 promax) to 11 x 14 and larger. low light shots not very good though. I hike a lot and suffered around Mont Blanc with my full frame Sony alpha 7Rii until I stopped carrying the tripod and a heavy 16-35 wide angle. the Sony alpha 7Rii with just the 28-200 weighs 45 oz - for my next hike in the Dolomites though I am thinking of my Sony A6700 - very light lenses too, including a 10-18mm lens and maybe a mini tripod. I create photo books of my trips and they all work well. Maybe I should consider the iPhone 15!!

Interesting info here, Martin. It’s always a series of major decisions for us when hiking or on an adventure photo trip. Weight and bulk versus capture needs. I’m eager to see how the iPhone performs. I expect I’ll upgrade to the iPhone 16 and compare the increased resolution to the 13 I’ll use in Spain.

I'm excited to see how you document your trip with your iPhone. I am often tempted to leave the heavy gear behind, but I have yet to give in to temptation yet.

On another note, if you are able to visit the Priorat region, I highly recommend it! We were enchanted during our visit last fall. La Rioja is also wonderful, but much more developed.

Thanks, Jennifer. This will be a more "get acquainted" trip and I'm already planning a follow-up, self-driving, photo intensive trip for next year (Spain and Portugal). Stay tuned for my novice attempts at social media!

I highly recommend the G Grip by Greg Williams. It attaches to your phone so you hold it like a camera and it has a bluetooth shutter button. You will be very impressed. https://ggrip.com/

Spain is wonderful. You will love it. But having had the iPhone 13 ProMax, and now the iPhone 15 ProMax - you’ll be missing a great deal if you don’t upgrade to the 15. 48MP makes a huge difference. Plus at different settings, you can also shoot at 24MP and old 12MP. I also am over 75, and carrying less about. I used the wonderful Light16 for several years, and fixated on how much I could do with digital. It shot 52MP - full out. The iPhone 15 is almost there. Buy extra storage for the 15. As much as you can get. I have 1TB, always shoot RAW - and have over 4000 images on mine. Which is handy when traveling, and not carrying computer equipment or uploading to a cloud that might not be available. Have a great time!

Donna, I couldn't agree with you more. The fact is that I considered upgrading my phone, but I'll be out of commision for a couple of months (shoulder surgery) starting in June and I figured it would be an exercise in frustration having the phone and not able top use it to the fullest. By time I'm ready the iPhone 16 will probably be out.

Trying for the right timing to get a new iPhone is like trying to get on one of those little kid-pushed merry-go-rounds in parks when we were kids. It had to slow down enough to hop on without dislocating your shoulders - but not too much. Good luck with shoulder surgery!

Two iPhone gizmos you may well want are a Moments macro lens and their telephoto adapter. Other than that, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the quality of images modern camera phones can produce.

Andrew, thanks for the advice. If this experiment works, and we can produce high quality prints, I will explore ways to make the iPhone experience meet my needs. Moment lenses would be a good start.

A thought on perspective, panoramic & wide angle shots with I phone. I find both often too optically distorted, so I will try merging normal shots on lightroom. with a camera I often use wide angle to increase depth of field in Landscapes etc, but the iPhone always seems to get everything in focus.

I too am wondering about the printing . Another thing that is of concern is the iPhone 15’s changing the resolution depending on magnification. With a camera kit, that doesn’t change w the lens. Then again, I am in Sagres and it is VERY windy here….glad I am not traveling with a view camera !
