The last post of the month is reserved for our paid subscribers as a little bonus thank-you for helping us keep the lights on. I usually discuss things typical for this newsletter. Today I wanted to try something a little bit special. A photo contest open only to our paid supporters. This contest has a little bit of a twist.
Remember way back to the first post this month? If you don’t it was our first take on a relatively new class of papers that combines two of our favorite characteristics; that would be matte baryta papers. There was a poll in that newsletter that had interesting results. A whopping 71% of reader would like to try a Baryta Matte paper but haven’t tried them yet. We’ve got some of Canson’s baryta matte paper in A3+ that we’d love for someone to see with one of their own pictures. That’s the one and only prize for this contest, an A3+ print of the winning picture shipped to your door (only residents of the USA; if you live elsewhere feel free to enter but we will notify you of the cost for shipping).
I used the word “elegant” to describe the overall presentation and vibe of the baryta matte papers we tried, so the rules are simple. Typically when I think of “elegant” photographs the first thing that pops into my mind is black & white. The second thing that pops to mind is minimalistic. Minimalistic can mean many things but I suppose overall it means something along the lines of an orderly composition rather than some specific number of elements contained.
The Rules
Submit one photograph per subscriber (a reasonable sized, email-able, JPEG)
The photograph must be black & white
The theme should be your best interpretation of “elegant” composition with only what’s needed.
You think that the picture would look great on Canson Baryta Photographique II Matt based on our initial evaluation.
We must receive submissions by September 17th, 2024.
The winner will be announced and featured here on September 25th, 2024.
Les and I will decide which submission best fits the bill and looks great on that paper.
Simple enough? Oh, we do plan on doing many more “Guides To Paper” and the first place we’ll look for example photographs that pair well with various papers is winners of this (and future) photo contests that are specific to various papers. If you who financially support us like this we’ll make it a regular feature and cover a lot of ground with different papers and genres including some surprises we know are coming up soon.
