A Purification Ritual
Fall colors are coming, at least for a large swath of the northern hemisphere. I am sure all of us of photographic bent would probably agree fall may be the ultimate season for photography. Not too hot, not too cold, bold color, pleasant walks, or epic pilgrimages to the Mecca’s of fall color. Maybe now is a good time for a photographic purge of sorts prior to the season?
Assuming you’ve ventured out onto the internet in the last decade, you’ve seen countless one-camera, one-lens testimonials. Could there be something to this? Will it really make me a better photographer or whatever claims are promised with these countless essays? My short answer is… Maybe, but it’s worth purging the baggage every now and then. I think doing so will bring a bit of joy and might even help you to bring a real camera out with you every time you’re out of the house in what may be the optimal photographic season.
Here’s a few essays to ponder for inspiration or amusement:
Try it on purpose if only for one outing with photographic purpose.
Here’s a photographer’s experience that’s truly strange but interesting
If you’ve learned a few things with similar exercises or even practice this minimalism regularly, please share some of your thoughts and experiences with the community. I am certainly going to go minimal as I get ready to rediscover the fall in the mid-Atlantic this year!
Fine Art Printing — Up Your Game
A full day of guided printing of your work on our large-format Canon professional printers and fine art papers. Les, and I present a practical and informative take on the current technology and tools for making prints as a basis that’s invaluable for those just starting as well as those that have been printing for years.
The rest of the day is dedicated to individual attention while printing your images from initial proofs to resolving issues, to producing prints that you envision from your images. The entire workshop is dedicated toward hands-on realization of your images on paper the way you envision them. The nature of this workshop limits participation to four participants each of the four times a year we offer it. The details and registration can be found on the Les Picker Fine Art Photography site.
Awagami Papers Up Close
Les and I have always loved Japanese papers for some of our projects. A few years ago we had the opportunity to see, touch, and use some of them and feel in love. If you think some of these exquisite materials might be a fit for some of your work we’ve designed a short half-day event that will allow you to evaluate the papers, better understand how to use them, and get some ideas for presentation.
There are two seats left for our September event. See details here.
If you like what we do and want to support the community in a small way please consider a paid subscription to help keep the lights on or buy us a coffee here and there. Thank You for all of the generous patrons that have helped out so far. Without that help we’d be hard pressed to fund the paper for the upcoming Baryta paper comparison!
