Here at The Paper Arts Collective (PAC) we always advocate for the value of studying the work of master photographers to help develop our own unique creative vision as print makers. We strongly recommend these five books for those interested in wildlife photography. If you buy any of these books through our Amazon affiliate links you will be helping support The PAC's mission of supporting printed photographic art.
Wild Encounters by David Yarrow
David Yarrow is a British photographer with an incredible body of work showcasing wildlife worldwide. Wild Encounters is a hefty coffee table book with iconic black & white images of animals from North Pole to South, and from Africa to Europe, the United States, China and more. This is a book to treasure and return to again and again for inspiration.
On This Earth a Shadow Falls by Nick Brandt
If there were an award for the very best wildlife photographer, Nick Brandt would have to be a finalist. On This Earth a Shadow Falls is his black & white opus to the majesty and fragility of Africa's wildlife. The book's price represents a major investment in one's art collection, but we here at The PAC find ourselves studying its pages over and over. The book itself is meticulously produced and will, no doubt, be an heirloom.
Books by Paul Nicklen
We find it impossible to suggest only one wildlife book by the National Geographic photographer, adventurer, and conservationist Paul Nicklen. Here are three of our favorites: Born to Ice, Bear: Spirit of the Wild, and Polar Obsession. You just can't go wrong with any of them. It's not just the incredible imagery (several shot underneath the Antarctic ice!), but the way Nicklen teaches us about the intricate ecology of the animals he profiles.
The Splendor of Birds: Art and Photographs From National Geographic
National Geographic has been the leader in wildlife photography for over a century. If you're into bird photography, The Splendor of Birds is a must have, filled with some of the most awesome images of our feathered co-inhabitants ever captured.
National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Animals by Catherine D. Hughes
Want to help the next generation appreciate and protect wildlife? Would you like to turn your kids on to wildlife photography? There's no better way to start than with educational books written by former National Geographic editor, writer, world traveler and passionate nature lover, Catherine D. Hughes. The First Big Book of Animals is a sweet, educational way to share time with kids.
